Friendships take time to build. Here a trusted friendship group becomes part of a Mentees movement improvisation. They'd always wanted to act and learn about filmmaking processes. With their peers they go on to create mini films based on 'The Boy at the back of classroom' by Benjamin Zephaniah in collaboration with myself and Adam Robertson fellow creative mentor + filmmaker. TMC 2021.
My Creative Mentor placement at Borrow Wood Primary School, Derby began in 2019 when I worked with 2 mentees at the school care of TMC. Zoe Fletcher the Head Teacher was so inspired, she independently took me onboard as a creative mentor/artist in resident for the school staff: creative inset days, staff twilights and CPD's followed over the next 5 years. This is exceptional for a school these days! It was a rich time and wonderful projects flourished. The school also went on fund me to work with a small group of learners experiences vulnerabilities and challenges in their lives.
As a 'community of learners' we participated in Derby Book Festival 2022, had work accepted as part of The National Gallery's 'Take One Picture' 2024 digital display, pursued Art Awards for Creative mentors and secured Artmarks Gold for the school! 2022-2024
T-shirts above: 'Magic' part of my mentees Arts Award (Harry Potter t-shirt collection). 'The Soup Movement' inspired the year 3 teachers to print T-shirts as part of an art module. An after school training session and they were off. Children designed collections in small groups and one was created for the Staff and author Ben Davis. Ben was so touched by this unexpected gift along with the childrens appreciation of his writing, he ran a video Q+A with the year 3's.
A fantastic celebration of a community of learning in circulation if ever there was one!

In response to the need for positive rough n' tumble, cuddles n' hugs, I am spot lighting a few of the many soft sculptures designed and made by mentees during our sessions. Above: we had visited the Leicester Space Centre - my mentee designs, sews and stuffs three characterful aliens and a cat.
